  • Ryan Jespersen: Real Talk about Real Talk

Ryan Jespersen is one of the great broadcast to podcast success stories. After being relieved from the coveted 9 to noon position at the venerable 630 CHED in Edmonton last year, Ryan hatched a plan to move his audience from terrestrial to digital, and at the same time fill a need for real talk in the digital space. In this episode, you will hear how Ryan got into radio i(and later TV) n Red Deer, Alberta, moved north to Edmonton where he hosted Breakfast television and eventually on to Corus owned 630 CHED. We spoke about Alberta politics and how it compared to when I was there in 1990's when Ralph Klein's Conservatives held a 40+ year stranglehold on the province - and how it devolved. We also talked about how he monetizes the show, how he moved people to digital, and what the goals of the show are in the future. We also spoke about my friend Christian Zyp who was a guest on the Sound Off Podcast a few months ago. Zyp appeared on Ryan's show and you can see appearance here. You can connect to Real Talk with Ryan Jespersen through the website, or give the YouTube channel a Subscribe.

  • Jamie Watson on Writing, Voicing, Promos & Voicing Promos.

Jamie Watson is more than just another radio voice. He also writes, and work with producers to get make the promos he voices entertaining as well as informative. I had the opportunity to work with Jamie for close to 8 years, and we still collaborate occasionally. How often do you write something once, produce it and then forget about it? That happens at a lot of radio stations and the result is generally a bland piece with a laundry list of sponsors and doggie commands that leave the listener somewhere between irritated or at best, unmoved. In this episode, Jamie shares his writing and voicing process on how some of his best work comes together - and we use lots of examples. If it read as a recipe: 1 Producer + 1 Writer + 1 Voice + (Collaboration + Passion) = An amazing promo If you would like to have Jamie be a part of your station, he has just put together a new website which you can get to by clicking here. Over the course of the many years I have worked with Jamie, he has shown me a few voice over tricks of the trade to help me get started with my voice over and voice acting career. I hold him equally responsible (along with Blair Bartrem, PD of Q107) for moving me in the MAC direction with software programs like Twisted Wave, and using an Apogee Duet to create great sound for my clients on the road. Those tools are also used to put this podcast together weekly. I don't want to speak for the show's producer Evan, but working with Jamie makes you a better producer, as well as voice over artist. Here's a sample of what Jamie makes for radio stations. This week I am on the road again to visit more great places. I will be in Green Bay this weekend for the annual NFL Trip to see the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks. I am a Bills fan but these are the perks when you pair up with a Packer Backer. The NFL is back and this is my favourite time of year! Yes the mop and Bucket for Chicken wings is a thing!

  • This is Julie Adam

Julie Adam is the Senior VP of Radio at Rogers. Often I will receive suggestions about who they want on the podcast and her name comes up often. This episode was recorded on a morning when radio ratings for the diary markets were released so we talked methodology and ratings returns, Radioplayer Canada, making mistakes and owning them (with some pretty impressive humility), and how radio and podcast can coexist. I had a half hour of questions scheduled but we carried the conversation on to cover talent, why Julie asked me a few questions about podcast. We also talk a bit about what doesn't keep her up at night... and even though she suffers from no sleep problems whatsoever (jealous...), we talk about what's the most important thing in radio: the people, the on-air talent, and watching them succeed. We even cover her mis-spent youths in Toronto creating mixed tapes alongside fellow Acadia University alumni, Lexie Badali. In May at Canadian Music Week, Julie Adam appeared on a panel entitled "The Future Is Female: Leading Women Tackle #MeToo, #TimesUp and Equality in the Workplace". Expect to hear a few words from Ruby Carr about this very special panel. Ruby is the recent winner of the Allan Waters Young Broadcaster of the Year Award in memory of Steve Young. Ruby Carr will be on the podcast next week and we can't wait to congratulate her on her big win at CMW. My good friend Sarah Burke did a podcast with Julie in October of 2021. Consider this an update to what I recorded up above. Last week she appeared on my good friend Sarah Burke's podcast Women in Media. Give Sarah's show a subscribe or follow when you can, and listen to this interview with Julie which is titled "Imperfectly Kind". It is also the working title of a new book Julie is currently writing about leadership. "An inspiring collection of thoughts and ideas on why kindness is the must-have superpower you need to lead." Can't wait to read it Julie!

  • Montana Getty: Journalism, Sports and Politics

Montana Getty has multiple passions for sports, media and politics flowing through her blood. Her grandfather is the late Don Getty, premiere of Alberta from 1985 to 1992, and quarterback of the Edmonton (then) Eskimos starting in 1955. Rarely does your family play into the context of a podcast episode, but given that the Getty name has so much to do with sport, politics, Alberta, oil, and now media. In this episode, you will hear why Montana chose a career in broadcasting and how she fulfils her other passions like sport and politics. Her broadcast career has gone from NAIT, to the streets of Edmonton, to Dawson Creek and now to Saskatoon. We also covered how she manages to keep her journalism work positive. We also talked about how she has to overcome harassment on the job, and perceived journalistic imbalances and misconceptions because of her family name. Montana did share what gets discussed at the holiday table, and why she loves the New York Yankees. Check out everything Montana... on her website. Montana's Dad came up a few times on the show, so it's only fitting you meet him here enjoying CFL action.... If you think the politics questions seem out-of-place for this episode, check out this story from 2019 when Montana supported an Alberta Party Candidate. Not sure how this qualifies as news but Montana is up to explain it and she did in our episode, and this news report in April 2019.

  • Rob Braide: Broadcaster, Musicologist, Charcutier, Cook and Sometimes Baker

There's about a dozen people I know where if I sit down for a long conversation with them, I am going to come away infinitely smarter and with lots to think about. Rob Braide has always been on that hit list. Whether we were having a drink or eating some of his wonderful cooking, or listening to his latest musical find, I was going to come away with more. In this episode you are going to hear a lot about Montreal and CHOM from the 1970's, his move from CHOM as program director to General manager of CJAD/FM96 in 1986, and CHOM's eventual return under his supervision in 2002. We talk about how French and English co-existed on CHOM in the 70's... until it didn't, why that was and the amazing unintended consequences of that government decision that shaped Francophone radio and culture in Quebec. We also talked about the unique musical sound of Montreal, why there is so much traffic, and the contributions the National Music Centre in Calgary is making to all Canadians. Rob joined Terry Dimonte in the closing days of the Terry Dimonte Show on CHOM-FM to talk about his time at CHOM. Another gem of a photo with Chris DeBurgh. I remember in 2005 Chris DeBurgh came by the CHOM studios and when I came out to meet Chris, he immediately asked for Rob. It was right after this that Rob showed Chris the infamous CHOM door. Here's an earlier photo from JP Guilbert's Facebook page.

  • Rob Walch: Putting Podcast Into Perspective

Rob Walch is the VP of Podcast Relations at :Libsyn. He made an appearance on our show back in 2018, and we were long overdue to have him back given the changing nature of the podcast world. During Rob's session at Podcast Movement in August, he manoeuvred his way through his presentation to debunk many of the marketing myths that are propelled across the internet. Myths like Rating and Reviewing the podcast will help it be discovered, and that there are over two million podcasts. (While true - only 325,000 are active) In this episode you will hear Rob debunk myths and put podcasting into perspective. Did you know the Super Bowl generates as much money in a day as the Podcast Industry does in a year? And yes, having a presence on YouTube will help your podcast get discovered. You're also likely doing better than you think in regards to your podcast's performance. We also go deep on podcast apps, podcast websites and talk about Apple's plans for ios in the future. Rob knows Apple products as he hosts Today in iOS. Rob host The Feed along with Elsie Escobar and it's one of the podcasts I listen to every other week to keep my view of the podcast industry in perspective. Five other podcasts and resources that I listen to on a regular basis to stay on top of podcasting. (In no particular order) Evo Terra: Podcast Pontifications. We had Evo on the show last year. James Cridland's Podnews. This is delivered Monday thru Friday in a newsletter and audio format. Sign up for the newsletter here. The Jag Show Podcast: Jon Gay hosts this short form weekly podcast with commentary on the week's podcast news. The New Media Show: Todd Cochrane from Blubrry and Rob Greenlee from Libsyn combine podcast superpowers to discuss what's new in podcasting for about 90 minutes weekly. Live on Youtube/Facebook and Twitter. Available in podcast form about 24 hours later. Paul Colligan: The Podcast Report Ask the Podcast Coach with Dave Jackson and Jim Collison Your Podcast on Video Rob also told us about the value of having your podcast episode on YouTube for discoverability. I would love to say that this is a complete waste of time but there are smarter people out there who have the evidence to demonstrate that it is good. After all, youTube is the number 2 search engine in the world after Google - who own YouTube.... I'm skeptical because YouTube is likely to recognize that this is just a still image of some audio and downgrade my channel. It's not like I have a huge following anyhow - but I would love to have you as a subscriber! Please give me a subscribe.

  • Susan Knight: Strong Female Energy

Susan Knight and I haven't seen each other since Labour Day 1995. We had just come back from the Molson Polar Ice Party in Tuktoyaktuk, NWT. She was working at 92 Rock in Sudbury and from there went to Chatham, Ontario and then Mountain-FM in Squamish, B.C. The rest is a blur but there were stints in Kelowna, Calgary and Victoria, B.C. whee she is now covering a maternity leave at 91.3 The Zone. You know what? She genuinely loves radio. In this episode, you will hear how much she loves radio: Everything from its ability to connect whether it is voice tracked or live; in a disaster or at 5 in the morning. We also talk about her venture into voiceover where she records audiobooks and radio ads for clients. She also admirably answered the hard questions such as her favourite morning show-co-hosts and how women are succeeding in radio despite the well documented obstacles. We also talked about how Susan fell in love with a pair of Doc Marten boots she saw on our trip to the Polar Ice Party in 1995, and her quest to find them in 2021. A couple of pieces on YouTube from the Molson Polar Ice Party. I'm in the front row of the concert. I remember a few of the faces from the video too. A fun watch. Also a piece from the CBC's The Journal with music journalist Laurie Brown on the concert coming to Tuk.

  • 35 Years of Jacobs Media

Fred Jacobs was a guest on Episode 53 in a preview to the Broadcasters Meet Podcasters sessions at Podcast Movement in 2017. I have always wanted to do an episode where we looked back at the evolution of his company and a tweet on the 35th anniversary of the company's creation reminded me that it's a good time to have that chat. We cover the creation of classic rock, his transition from the WRIF in Detroit to Jacobs Media, and his relationship to Buffalo where had a great success, a small failure, and a life long September 11th memory. We also talked a bunch about the discipline in writing a daily blog, the age of acceleration, the importance of non-radio conferences like the CES and Podcast Movement and the importance of networking, meeting people and attending cocktail parties. There have been many great people who have appeared on this podcast who have worked (or still work) at Jacobs Media, including Lori Lewis, Seth Resler and Dave Beasing. Resources: Subscribe the the Jacobs Media Blog - you won't regret it. The CES Webinar which was highly talked about at The Conclave Fred mentioned the name of Kashmir Birk whom he sat with on a panel, you can connect with his LinkedIn page here. • September: The Fall of Radio

September is an exciting month that comes complete with the hopes and promise of a new year. I took some time to hang with family recently and take what is normally a slow time of the podcast year to unwind a bit. I took some radio notes and read a few things and am sharing what came bubbling up. Think of it as some sort of lame meditation. In this episode, you'll hear why the word retirement pops up when long time staff depart a station, are talent being properly compensated for their social media activity, National Radio Day is stupid and needs initiative, and our podcast was reviewed by Phil Edmonds and we thought it was awesome to be recommended. We al so made mention of Perry Michael Simon's piece in All Access.com. Click here to read it. I also made mention that you could sign up for the newsletter. Head to the top of the page and part with your e-mail address and we can stay connected on all things podcast and radio. New Podcast Alert! Guests who have appeared so far on the show include Sound Off Alumni Mistress Carrie and Paige Nienaber. Here's a fun follow on Instagram for those who find radio to be arcane at times. There's a grain of truth in every post.

  • Morgan McCarthy: Wisconsin Radio Online Everywhere

Morgan McCarthy is the host of the 715 Newsroom, a local Wisconsin online radio news source that provides news in the Chippewa Valley area in a way that is never boring. They also have a podcast called News Makers that is currently on its 22nd episode. You'll hear Morgan's voice on radio shows owned by Midwest Family Broadcasting all over Wisconsin. Morgan's original break in radio (WDRK 999 The Carp) was with Maverick Media. After she left, there was an ownership transfer to the current company Midwest Family Broadcasting-and this is the regime that brought Morgan out of "mic/mom-retirement" and back into the radio world. Love to the local GM and management team, respect to the company. In this episode, Morgan explains her not-at-all planned saunter into working in radio through her serendipitous acceptance to Emerson College for communication, how radio became her passion, her love for the Green Bay Packers, and so much more. In addition to other market work and remote news clients, Morgan is following the advice of peers and just tipping her toes over into voiceover work. For more info on all the endeavours Morgan is currently undertaking, visit her website: morganmccarthy.com. Also be sure to check out the 715 Newsroom website. They cover news, pop culture, local updates, and much more. They also have past segments that are archived, a podcast dedicated to the same things their news show covers, a playlist that shows all the past songs that have played on the radio that day, there's lots of fun things to discover there. We made mention of the Oxbow Hotel. Where every room comes with a vinyl player.
