  • The 411 on Podcasting with Rob Walch from Libsyn

Libsyn is short for Liberated Syndication. Rob Walch is the VP of Podcast Relations for the 14 year old proud Pittsburgh company. The 2016 Podcasting Hall of Fam inductee is also the host of a few podcasts including podcast411, Today In iOS, and The Feed which he co-hosts with fellow HoF inductee Elsie Escobar. Rob has built a reputation on trust in the industry by being honest: You're not going to make money right way, it is going to take time to grow your audience, and podcast is not as easy as it looks. He has seen many podcast ventures come and go, and we discuss why some are durable, and others haven't been. This episode is great if you are considering getting into the podcast space with your brand, or are thinking about starting a podcast yourself. If you want to dig deeper into learning more - Dave Jackson's School of Podcast is a good place to start. He also answers your questions in a weekly show that you can find here. There has been a lot going on in the podcast world, but Rob qualified that much of what is going on is the result of a lot of publications increasing their reporting on transactions and news. Speaking of which - we also spoke about the launch earlier this week of Podcast Business Journal which is created by the people at Radio Ink. (If RadioInk is getting involved that should be an indication to anyone in radio where the business is headed, so sign up) Rob’s most recent contribution is here. More in this episode as we talked about the the impact of Spotify, Google, and what the Netflix of Podcasting looks like. (spoiler: It already exists and chance are good you are using it) Libsyn made news last week with their collaboration with Pandora to distribute podcasts. Rob provides some great insights into implications for podcasters in the latest episode of the Feed which you should subscribe to: If you are looking for a podcast host, you have some good choices, and there are some questionable choices. Free isn't always free so check the terms of service carefully and do your homework before engaging with a podcast host. To find out more about Libsyn, e-mail Rob and he can point you in the right direction. #podcast #podcasting

  • Mandatory Mandy James

Mandy James is the morning show host at 102.9 the Wolf in Minneapolis along with Pat PT Thomas and Greg Thunder. [Note: At the time of publication, the station was known as Buz'n 102.9 and Mike Dubs was co-host instead of Greg Thunder] I've gotten to know Mandy over the last few years at the Conclave Summer Learning Conference. I watched as she bravely networked her way through the room in 2017, eventually giving me a gift bag complete with a Conclave survival kit which include a small bottle of something flavourful when 5pm kicked in. She also asked hard questions to industry leaders that needed answering as it pertains to what companies are doing about advancing females in the radio business. Coincidentally, Cox Media unveiled a corporate strategy to address that while we were recording the podcast. In this episode, we talked about he path from listening to WLOL 99-and-a-half as a child led to stints in Iowa, Wisconsin, Rockford, Illinois and now she's back in the Twin Cities. A lot of what we spoke about stems from our passion in attending the Conclave, so you will hear it come up more than once. Finally, how does she find the bravery to ask hard questions? Mandy was featured in two blogposts from Fred Jacobs stemming from her question at Conclave 43. The subject arose again after Jacobs Media released some eye-opening data about on air performers and referenced a women in the workplace study. And here were this year's "Survival Kit" bags she put together at #Conclave43 #Minneapolis #country #women #radio #broadcast #Wisconsin

  • Amanda Logan from A to Z103.5

Amanda Logan headed west in 2008 to Regina, Saskatchewan where she did evenings at 104.9 The Wolf. Amazingly, we still have audio from that era and it makes an appearance in this podcast. A few weeks ago, The evening personality at Toronto's Z103.5, got married and in lieu of a wedding present, I figured a podcast appearance would suffice. We talked about her journey west and then back east to the Big Smoke where she worked at Corus, CHUM-FM and now Evanov's flagship station Z103.5. She also was the 2013 winner of the Allan Waters Young Broadcaster of the Year award in memory of Steve Young. We profiled Steve Young the best way we could by having JJ Johnston on to talk about him back in episode 39. The last few years have seen Amanda add teaching, voiceover, yin yoga, pugs and now a husband to the roster. (She is also the imaging voice of a number of radio stations across North America and podcasts around the world) Her voiceover page is located here. This episode is powered by Promosuite who we thank for being perpetually awesome! I mentioned during the show that Amanda showed up at Rock on the Range in Winnipeg. After we gave her backstage access I gave her the bad news that she was now going to do a few band interviews. "You didn't think these passes were free did you?" It was really about getting Amanda out of her comfort one in that moment. She did a great job that day and I never forgot how she didn't shy away from the challenge. #toronto #evanov

  • The Very Speakable N@ Lauzon

Nat Lauzon has been a mainstay on Montreal radio for almost 20 years. Her career path has moved in somewhat tidy cycles, spending her teen years working on air in her hometown of Timmins, Ontario while in high school. Then she worked at Toronto's Mix 99.9 while she was finishing her degree at Ryerson Polytechnic. In 1999, she jumped at the opportunity to move to Montreal to with Blair Bartrem at Mix 96. She did mornings up until 2002 and then took over the midday show and was pretty much number 1 in the city for the rest of the decade. We also sounded like a retired couple talking about aches and pains and coping with what ails us. Although I didn't mention it in the show, I have some Tinnitus or some hearing loss as a result of a combination of skeet shooting, headphones, and rock concerts. Nat also has been coping with Vertigo and has posted some eye raising stuff. Some of the stories Nat and I touch on in this episode can be found in the show I did with Blair Bartrem in Episode 75. You can hear Nat weekends on Montreal's 92.5 the BEAT. Nat also has a voiceover company called Speakable and she is the voice of a number of TV ads, on hold systems, corporate ads, and often when you are on hold. She readily admits she records her first voice sessions of the day in her jammies, but she eventually gets dressed to walk the dogs. The names of two dearly departed friends also came up in this episode including Mike Sinel who did promotions for stations like CHOM and Mix 96 in Montreal. Mike was brilliant in putting together countless Montreal promotions including the Zamboni run to Toronto. Also we just surpassed the second anniversary of Andre Maisonneuve's passing. Andre worked at Mix 99.9, Mix 96 and was part of the launch of Live 88.5 in Ottawa up until his death. I speak for everyone who worked along side theses gentlemen, that they are truly missed. That's Nat & Andre on the Zamboni run to Toronto, and Mike Sinel and myself in the Spring of 1992 when we worked at CHOM. Blair Bartem was doing promotions and insisted was instrumental in securing those awesome phones leftover from the Vietnam War. #montreal #radio

  • The Ruthless Restructuring of Jenna Mosher

Full Disclosure: I totally helped myself to the title of this episode from an Ottawa Citizen Headline that you can read here. Jenna Mosher and Jesse Reynolds were let go from Jump 106.9 in Ottawa days before the new fiscal year was about to begin in radio land. What ensued was a tsunami of online banter that took up the better part of September. For whatever reason, Ottawa doesn't like to be pushed around by Toronto; whether it's courtesy of the Maple Leafs, or head office. Also accelerating the flames is the choice of the morning duo's replacements. An American syndicated show out of Seattle. The move sends a number of possible messages including: (1) We don't think we can find Canadians who are good enough to do this (2) We don't feel like investing in this station at the local level anymore. (3) We don't think we can catch the competition. Some of these reasons might be true, half true, or some sort of mix and match combo of truth. Not lost in all this was waiting fort the right moment to speak to Jenna about her career in radio which has taken her from her hometown of Vancouver, to North Bay, Niagara and then Ottawa in 2014 where she was part of the launch team at Jump 106.9, which cashed out on 20 plus years of playing rock music on that frequency - a move the same company tried and retreated on in Winnipeg. In this episode, you will get to find out neat things like how Jenna found her way to Ottawa and how she spent 4 years at Troy University in Alabama which set her up to cope with change and be an advocate for charity. In the meantime - check out Jesse and Jenna's Messy Podcast which is producing episodes at a fast and furious pace. Click on the image to connect to the podcast. #ottawa #corus

  • Giving Thanks on (Canadian) Thanksgiving

I really love Thanksgiving. In Canada we celebrate it as a tribute to the bountiful harvest. There are a lot of people who enjoy it more than Christmas which gets lost in a sea of wrapping paper and Amazon deliveries. So in my turkey comatose, I offer up a word of thanks to those who support the show every week; and that ranges to anyone from a listener, to a sponsor, to simply sharing or following the social media accounts. I also provide insight into what it takes to make this podcast run every week, and answer a few questions that frequently come my way. If you would like to launch your podcast - I would love to work with you. The Facebook Page Twitter Instagram NEW! YouTube (Apparently we can't start branding this properly unless we get 100 subscribers, so please Subscribe if you can) Donations Welcome! We were mentioning our new Sound Off show which is being assembled on a very inconsistent weekly basis. This week our guest was TJ Connors.

  • Larry Gifford: When Life Gives You Parkinsons

Larry Gifford has Parkinson's. On his Radio Stuff Podcast last April, Larry announced that he had Parkison's Disease. If you get the chance, please give that episode a listen. Larry is known to many through his time at ESPN in Bristol, 710 ESPN in LA, KIRO in Seattle, or from his most recent home at CKNW in Vancouver. We spent our time talking about Corus' foray into the podcast space and how radio and podcast are beginning to intersect. He also gave us an inside look into how the show is put together and what equipment is used. Niki Reitmayer, who is also the host of This Is Why, will be joining Larry on the show. Also - I mentioned above that there is a companion episode to this on Larry's Radio Stuff podcast. Please listen to this episode either before or after you dig into this one. The new podcast is called "When Life Gives You Parkinsons" and it is on CuriousCast, the new Corus Podcast Network. Subscribe to the podcast for free wherever you get your shows follow the social media accounts: Instagram Facebook Twitter This week's show is powered by NLogic. David Phillips joined me on the Sound Off Show this week and talked about radio's future and its relationship with buyers and sellers. Please subscribe to the YouTube Channel. We will have regular guests on the show. I have to admit that I rather enjoy doing the YouTube thing a little more than I thought. There isn't as much editing and I can produce the show on the fly and we can get timely interviews about more current stuff that podcast doesn't allow you to do. That's my way of saying, I am in it for the long haul so Subscribe when you visit the page. #cknw #vancouver #parkinsons #news

  • Barrett Sports Media Turns 3

Jason Barrett celebrated the third anniversary of Barrett Sports Media last week, and we have an annual podcast chat to talk about the state of Sports Radio. After three years of doing anything, you have entrenched yourself into the landscape well enough to speak reflectively, so I asked him about the trials and tribulations of shifting from programming radio to partnering with radio. He blogs, podcasts, works with sports radio brands across America, and I have admired his work and always appreciate the perspective he brings to the podcast when he comes on as the NFL Season gets underway. If you have time to listen to this podcast - make time for his as well as he has many of the thought leaders from radio industry on his show which comes out on a regular basis. Jason is also an avid wrestling fan; we did not get a chance to cover this on the podcast, but back in the 2000's he did a wrestling show that had more downloads than anything else at the station he was working at. In this episode, we talk about the changes with Monday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, how Tony Romo did in his first year and how to deal with Kaepernick situation, when it unwittingly becomes a story. By the way, if you like what you hear and want to work with Jason, he is really good at working with your teams short term in advance of ratings or when the staff are all together. OR even better - send your staff to the Barrett Sports Radio Summit in Los Angeles in February. (e-mail Jason for more) This episode is powered by PromoSuite. #sports #radio #nfl

  • Jonny Staub Through the Out Door

Jonny Staub got his big break when James Stewart offered him a job at Calgary top rated Power 107 shortly after we all calmed down from the Y2K problem. Jonny had some an incredible start to his career with big ratings at an early age at big radio stations in big markets. Then came a personal reality check. Which was later followed be the stresses of coming out publicly, and coping with the competitive nature of his work, an the support he gets from work. In this episode, you'll hear how Jonny handles the pressures associated with putting together a morning show with his co-hosts Holly and Nira at Virgin Radio 94.5 in one of North America's biggest markets.
